Cipe Pineles

Cipe Pineles was the first independent American woman art director. She emigrated to America in 1923 from Poland. In 1926 she studied commercial at at the Pratt Institute. Her career started out in textiles. In 1932 she joined Conde Nast as the only woman working in the design department. She became the art director at Glamour (yea!) in 1942. She spent much of her magazine career as the art director at many of the Conde Nast publications. She was best known for her approach for dynamics of the page as a whole- photography, type etc.

The above left cover from Seventeen mag. was published in July, 1949. It was noted for it's visual equivalence between the striped umbrella and the typography. Check out how it really isn't a perfect reflection.

The right cover is from Charm. It is based on the contrast between black and white and the use of running text as a backdrop.

I enjoy looking a older photos. This picture of the woman on Seventeen magazine reminds me of a collage type of of arrangement because of the older photography.

I really like the image on the left. The reflection makes the work more interesting and makes you want to look at the art work even longer.

I love the formal construction of the Cassandre poster.
