Rock The Vote

With only 30 something days (depending on when you read this) left until the next election, I thought it would be good timing to write a post about Frank Fairey.

Frank Shepard Fairey is a contemporary artist, graphic designer and illustrator. He is one of today's most influential street artists.

If you think your student designs could never compare to the professionals, think again. Fairey created the "André the Giant Has a Posse" sticker campaign in 1989, while attending the Rhode Island School of Design . This later evolved into the "Obey Giant" campaign, which has grown via an international network of collaborators replicating Fairey's original designs. Giant was eventiully made into a small film and has showcased at many indies including Sundance.

Like many designers, Fairey holds his Bachelor of Arts in illustration. After graduating from school, he founded a small printing business in Providence, RI called Alternate Graphics, specializing in tshirt and sticker silkscreens.

In 2003 Fairey founded the Studio Number One design agency. This is the agency that produced the cover work for the Black Eyed Peas's album Monkey Business and the poster for the film Walk the Line. ] Fairey has also designed the covers for The Smashing Pumpkins' album Zeitgeist, Flogging Molly's CD/DVD Whiskey on a Sunday, and the Led Zeppelin compilation Mothership.

Currently, Fairey is very well known for his political designs. Fairey created a series of posters supporting Barack Obama's candidacy for President in 2008. The posters sold out fast and are worth at least several hundreds of dollars each on eBay. He also created an exclusive design for Rock the Vote (see above).

It is always positive when people create art as a reminder and motivation to be part of politics.
